The MLB schedule is coming and the Cubs have announced their home-opener.

With the MLB season inching closer, teams are starting to make plans for their season openers. According to Flo Ottis, a Chicago Cubs beat reporter, the Cubs will open their season on July 24 at Wrigley Field against the Brewers. In a 60-game season, each game will take on more importance, so the Cubs need to show up ready to play on Opening Day.

What’s the significance of the Cubs playing the Brewers at Wrigley Field on Opening Day?

It’s unsurprising that the Cubs will start out against a division rival, considering 40 of the 60 games will come against the NL Central. In a shortened season, every team will have a shot at the division, which makes the Central that much more competitive this summer. Four teams are realistic contenders in the division, with an improved Reds team joining the Cubs, Brewers, and Cardinals in the playoff hunt.

After a disappointing 2019 campaign, the Brewers will look to recapture what they did in 2018, when they won 96 games on the back of Christian Yelich’s MVP run. The opening day starter is still a bit of a mystery for the Cubs. Jon Lester, Yu Darvish, and Kyle Hendricks are all candidates for the job, but manager David Ross never selected one during Spring Training.

The Brewers will likely start Brandon Woodruff, who had a great start to the 2019 season, where he posted a 3.62 ERA in 22 starts, which earned him an All-Star appearance. In late July, he suffered an oblique injury that sidelined him for the rest of the season.

Cubs baseball will be back at Wrigley on July 24, which just sounds right. There’s no better place to kick off the MLB season than at Wrigley Field. Get excited Cubs fans, baseball is coming back!
