10 NFL backup quarterbacks who can steal starting jobs in 2020
The Redskins want 2020 to be the season when Dwayne Haskins breaks out and shows everyone he’s the team’s franchise quarterback. That doesn’t mean first-year head coach Ron Rivera is convinced the former Ohio State star is going to turn that dream into a reality.
That’s why Rivera urged the front office to bring in Allen during the offseason. Rivera knows exactly what Allen can and can’t do. He gave him 12 starts with the Panthers last season before moving to Washington.
The Redskins genuinely hope they don’t need to turn to Allen at any point. He isn’t going to be anything more than a caretaker for a franchise that needs a quarterback capable of elevating the personnel around him. If Allen takes over for Haskins then it’s a sure sign that the Redskins aren’t going to make any meaningful progress on the field in 2020.
Moreover, it’s safe to say that if the Redskins turn to Allen over Haskins for any non-injury related issue then they will be in the market to draft a new quarterback next April. Allen will only see the field in the event that Haskins is judged to be incompetent.
