With offer on the table, can the Raiders swoop in and sign Jadeveon Clowney?
By Mark Powell
Jadeveon Clowney remains the biggest name on the NFL free agent market. Could Las Vegas be an option?
Leave it to Jon Gruden and Mark Davis to pick out the best remaining free agent as a way to upgrade their roster this late into the process. The Raiders defensive line showed promise last year, and plucking Jadeveon Clowney, who’s single-handedly able to change the course of a game, from the free agent market is an option they shouldn’t ignore.
To this point, Clowney hasn’t received the offer he covets, as he’s stuck considering short-term lucrative deals. The Raiders are unlikely to provide him with his asking price, at least not yet, but Cecil Lammey reports the Raiders have extended an offer to the former No. 1 pick.
Could the Las Vegas Raiders sign Jadeveon Clowney?
The 49ers, Browns, Titans and Seahawks have all made offers for Clowney, with Cleveland reportedly the most lucrative option thus far. Despite the opportunity to play alongside Myles Garrett, Clowney hasn’t shown much interest in playing in Cleveland.
The Raiders, entering their first season in Vegas, could use a big name on their defensive line for marketing and on-field reasons. Maxx Crosby and Clelin Ferrell are penciled in as starters for the long-term, and Vegas hasn’t been shy about investing in the position, either. With Rod Marinelli as defensive line coach, the Raiders have all the makings of a dominant bunch in the years to come.
But why not accelerate that timeline?
Vegas literally gave Gruden an ownership stake upon agreeing to become their head coach, so he’s got plenty of influence to overpower the small financial limitations that Davis has placed upon him in potentially signing Clowney. Should Gruden be able to pluck several million more from Davis’ pockets, then perhaps Clowney will listen.
To this point, the South Carolina product has been unwilling to budge off his demands and that approach might pay off if Gruden has his way.
