Chiefs safety Tyrann Mathieu is the best teammate.

To say that Kansas City Chiefs safety Tyrann Mathieu is thrilled that the team extended star quarterback Patrick Mahomes might be an understatement.

The standout defensive back quickly took to social media on Monday to express his excitement after Mahomes signed the largest deal in NFL history, a 10-year, $450 million extension that will keep him in Kansas City through 2031.

Per Chiefs reporter B.J. Kissel, was the first to reach out to both Mahomes and head coach Andy Reid, messaging them via text, Instagram, and Twitter. Mathieu doubled down on Twitter on Tuesday, saying he’s glad to see his teammates get the kind of money they deserve.

Mahomes was mostly quiet on Twitter after news broke of his extension, mainly retweeting and replying to teammates, including Mecole Hardman, Chris Jones and Tyreek Hill.

However, Chiefs beat writer Sam McDowell reported that Mahomes singled Mathieu out as one of his most excited teammates, with the Super Bowl MVP estimating that he had messaged him five times once the extension was reported.

With Mahomes now taking up a sizable portion of the salary cap for the next decade, Mathieu and other teammates may have to take pay cuts down the line if they hope to stay in Kansas City. However, for now, the Chiefs have extended an already wide-open title window.

For as excited as Mathieu and his other teammates seem about their MVP signal caller’s extension, Mahomes still has his eyes on the prize. Bleacher Report’s Adam Lefkoe asked him about his deal on Monday night, with the quarterback replying that he’s “still got rings to collect.”

Statements like that are certainly a reason why Mathieu is so hyped. With the team’s core outside of Chris Jones locked in for the next few seasons, Kansas City is fully capable of starting a dynasty. The defending champions lost few pieces in the offseason, and that sort of continuity combined with the addition of a strong rookie class could lead to a return trip to the Super Bowl.
