Drafting the Scouting Combine superstar usually doesn’t work out for the team that ultimately selects them. Take for 2017, for example. TCU wideout John Ross broke the 40-yard dash record set by former NFL running back Chris Johnson, but strained both his calves in the process. That didn’t matter to the Bengals, who opted to draft him with the ninth overall pick.

Ross’ rookie season was a dud, mostly due to being limited to three games with knee and shoulder injuries. In his limited amount of games, Ross received a grand total of two targets.

In 2018, Ross tallied 21 receptions for 210 yards and seven touchdowns, coming off 58 targets. This past season, it appeared that Ross was on track for a career-year, but was knocked out for eight contests due to yet another shoulder injury, where he recorded 506 receiving yards and three scores.

Prior to the start of the new league year, the Bengals opted against exercising his fifth-year option, and Ross has a lot going against him in terms of remaining in Cincinnati.

The team is focused on retaining star receiver A.J. Green and they drafted Clemson wideout Tee Higgins in the second round of this year’s draft. Add that to Tyler Boyd leapfrogging him on the depth chart, Ross is bound to be on another team come the start of the 2021 season.
