Pick Analysis. . Sheldon Richardson. 3. player. Scouting Report. 53. DT

Sheldon Richardson is a 2013 first-round pick by the New York Jets who found himself facing a bit of a reality check early in his career after facing legal issues on several occasions. That left him on the free agent market before the 2019 season after spending one year with the Minnesota Vikings.

The Browns took a chance on the 2014 Pro Bowler by signing him to a three-year, $37 million contract. $21 million of that was guaranteed, but a key point is that his dead cap value drops all the way down to $1.6 million in 2021. Cutting Richardson before the 2021 season saves the Browns exactly $12 million.

He will be 30 years old this November and the savings from cutting the veteran can be applied toward both Garrett and a new deal for Larry Ogunjobi. It is also important to note Richardson was brought in by former Browns GM John Dorsey. He has been retained to this point, which was obvious given his contract, but may be among the first to go with that team-friendly $12 million just waiting to be gained.
