Oklahoma football: 5 recruits most likely to sign with Oklahoma Sooners
By John Buhler
If the Sooners land another five-star prospect in this cycle in addition to dual-threat quarterback Caleb Williams from Washington, D.C., it would have to be running back Camar Wheaton from Garland, Texas. The Lakeview Centennial High School standout is the No. 2 running back in his class, the No. 2 player from Texas and the No. 19 overall player in the 247Sports Composite.
Wheaton is 5-foot-11 and 190 pounds with 27 formal offers. In addition to Oklahoma, he is looking at these three programs primarily: The LSU Tigers, the SMU Mustangs and the Texas Longhorns. While him committing to play at SMU would certainly turn some heads, having LSU and Texas in the mix won’t make things easy for the Sooners to land his commitment.
Good thing the primary recruiter for Wheaton’s commitment is Oklahoma legend and former Dallas Cowboys star running back DeMarco Murray. Though very new to coaching, Murray did land a pair of three-star players to the Arizona Wildcats when he was a part of Kevin Sumlin’s staff. He may have to step it up though, as LSU legend Kevin Faulk is his primary recruiter over there.
At this time, I don’t think we can cross off any of these four teams just yet. With SMU still in the mix, that could mean Wheaton is very interested in playing close to home in a “Power 6” Conference. LSU is the reigning national champions and Texas is Oklahoma’s biggest rival. Though we have to believe the Sooners are the leaders, Wheaton’s recruitment sure will be fascinating.
