3 salary cap casualties for the Packers after the 2020 season
Dean Lowry was a fourth-round pick by the Packers in 2016 and has been with the team ever since. The defensive end received a three-year extension last summer, but did not respond with an amazing season.
2019 was Lowry’s first season without a single sack even though he appeared in all 16 games. He did set a new career-high with 47 combined tackles, which was one positive.
Lowry is on the books right now as the highest-paid defensive lineman for the 2021 season with Kenny Clark set to hit free agency. Another average season puts his status in jeopardy and the Packers can save $3.3 million by moving on before the 2021 season. Those savings jump to $4.8 million if Lowry were to be moved after June 1, as the dead cap hit would spread out between 2021 and 2022.
The raises elsewhere on defense, along with the money committed to Rodgers, doesn’t allow for Lowry to stick around if he is not living up to the money. The Packers gave him the extension, but the details show that the team wanted a way out if needed.
