Which NFL offenses will take a giant leap forward in 2020?
By John Buhler
The other team besides the Atlanta Falcons that has a terrific shot of cracking the top 10 in NFL scoring offenses is the Arizona Cardinals. Let’s hope so. Otherwise, what was the point of hiring an Air Raid coach who failed at his alma mater in Kliff Kingsbury? Though his time at Texas Tech didn’t pan out, his 2019 Cardinals improved considerably to the No. 16 scoring offense in the NFL.
While one would think Arizona would have been an all-out aerial assault in Kingsbury’s scheme, he proved to be more than a one-trick pony as a head coach. It might come as a major shock to you, but the Cardinals finished with the 10th-most rushing yards in the league. The problem was the passing game ranked 24th in total yardage. However, that will change in a big way in 2020.
It will be Kyler Murray‘s second year as an NFL starting quarterback. Keep in mind he was a two-sport star at Oklahoma. Many though he’d pursue a career in baseball, as he was a top-10 pick by the Oakland Athletics. Too bad he took over for Baker Mayfield at OU in 2018, won the Heisman Trophy and ended up the No. 1 overall pick to the lowly Cardinals in the 2019 NFL Draft.
With running back Kenyan Drake playing on the transition tag and another year of the Murray/Kingsbury partnership, Arizona could be top-12 in the league as is. Then the Cardinals went out and traded for No. 1 wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins with the Houston Texans. His addition could take this Cardinals offense from No. 16 overall in 2019 to top-eight in 2020.
