Which NFL offenses will take a giant leap forward in 2020?
By John Buhler
Besides being terrible, there is a reason the Cincinnati Bengals used their No. 1 overall pick on 2019 Heisman Trophy winner Joe Burrow out of LSU in the 2020 NFL Draft. Second-year head coach Zac Taylor needs his quarterback he can hopefully build a winner around in the Queen City. Whatever we saw in Paul Brown Stadium last year didn’t honor the legacy of the iconic coach.
Burrow may have a wet paper bag of an offensive line to throw behind, but he does have plenty of weapons to work with as a rookie in Cincinnati. The Bengals used the franchise tag on borderline Pro Football Hall of Fame wide receiver A.J. Green. He’s about one or two good years from ensure Canton enshrinement. The problem is he played in nine games in the last two seasons combined.
Cincinnati drafted very well this past spring, as the Bengals added former Clemson Tigers standout Tee Higgins with the top pick of the second round. Look for he and Burrow to develop a rapport that may one day rival what Green had with his draft classmate Andy Dalton. They were fantastic together for seven years there, as one of the most underrated duos in NFL history.
Simply put, the Bengals will be better than the 30th best scoring offense in football. If they’re not, Taylor gets kicked to the curb Dick LeBeau, Mike Shula or Bruce Coslet style. Burrow has Joe Mixon to hand the ball off to, as well as one of the best No. 3 wide receivers in football in Tyler Boyd. Look for the Bengals to be top-half in both passing and rushing yards in the league in 2020.
