Peacock, NBCUniversal’s new streaming service, will livestream EPL games. Here’s how to watch.

NBC Sports announced via a press release on Wednesday that it will stream every July 15 English Premier League game for free on Peacock to celebrate the launch of the new streaming service. It’s a bold strategy that is sure to give the service some publicity, but how can soccer fans watch?

While fans can currently stream games with an NBC Sports Gold membership, Variety’s Todd Spangler reported that Peacock will become the “exclusive U.S. home” for the Premier League next season, so if fans want to continue receiving these NBC Sports Gold matches, they must sign up for Peacock Premium, which comes with all of the Premier League content and so much more.

However, as far as the 2020 season is concerned, fans will just need to head over to Peacock’s website or check out the Peacock app on July 15 to watch four EPL matches, including a highly-anticipated showdown between league champion Liverpool and Arsenal.

Positioning the service as the exclusive platform for the Premier League in the United States is a bold move on NBCUniversal’s part, but could position it for future success. Much like NFL fans pay for a Sunday Ticket subscription from Directv, EPL fans will likely be more than willing to pay for a subscription if it means watching the games.

While fans may not be necessarily thrilled about it, Peacock can use soccer fans as a way to keep up with the likes of Hulu, HBO Max, and other streaming services with regards to subscription revenue.

It remains to be seen whether or not Peacock will be successful with such a power play. Hulu is the major streaming service in the live sports field, and stealing away market share could be difficult for a brand-new service. However, exclusive rights to the EPL will go a long way, and enthusiastic soccer fans could make the gamble pay off.
