8. NFL’s worst contracts: QB Carson Wentz (4 years, $128 million with $108 million guaranteed)

This contract hasn’t even kicked in yet and it has disaster potential for the Philadelphia Eagles. Finding a competent quarterback is a must in the NFL and if a team thinks they have a guy who can be their franchise quarterback he gets paid pretty quickly.

This was the case with Wentz, who was playing on an MVP level for the Eagles when he inked this extension in 2019. Wentz’s new deal kicks in starting next season, and its hefty guarantees are problematic for a guy who has trouble staying healthy.

The Eagles do have a Super Bowl ring with Wentz, but he didn’t play in that game due to a knee injury. Wentz has gotten Philadelphia to the playoffs in three straight years but has only played in one half of one playoff game, with Nick Foles and Josh McCown handling the rest of the postseason snaps for the Eagles.

The good news for the Eagles is that this extension hasn’t kicked in yet so if Wentz can stay healthy the deal could become a bargain. The problem is that Wentz’s health is so dicey and the deal doesn’t have a reasonable out until 2024, so the Eagles are stuck with Wentz and his huge payday could limit their ability to put more talent around him.
