Look for these 5 NFL defenses to be greatly improved in 2020
By John Buhler
Not gonna lie. It blew my mind to see how bad of a scoring defense the Tampa Bay Buccaneers had a season ago. I knew they were Jeff Fisher 7-9 B.S. with more than enough Jameis Winston interceptions to go around, by it’s still crazy to see a team like the Buccaneers with a bottom-eighth scoring defense at No. 29 overall. They’re going to be so much better than that in 2020.
Where do we even begin? First, Winston doesn’t play for the Buccaneers any more, as he can’t throw nearly two picks a game riding pine as Drew Brees’ backup with the division rival New Orleans Saints. Second, Tom Brady has taken his talents to the Florida Gulf Coast. He may not be the superstar quarterback like he once was, but he’s not going to be a turnover machine. Book it!
Lastly, and most importantly, Todd Bowles is a phenomenal defensive coordinator. While the New York Jets gig didn’t work out because they’re the Jet-y Jets and nothing ever works out for Gang Green for lengthy stretches, Bowles will star in his second year leading the Tampa Bay defense. One would expect he’ll be promoted from within to be the Buccaneers head coach in a few years.
For now, it’ll be full-blown “no risk it, no biscuit” with these Bruce Arians Tompa Bay Gronkaneers. This is a franchise capable of being the first to play the Super Bowl in its own stadium. Of course, Tampa Bay will need to end its decade-plus playoff drought first, but with star defensive players like Ndamukong Suh, Lavonte David and Shaquil Barrett, that front-seven will be so ferocious.
