Kansas City Chiefs: 3 players who might be casualties of Chris Jones’ new deal
Potential Out for Chiefs in 2021.
Tyreek Hill has been a dynamic athlete and weapon for the Kansas City Chiefs since being drafted in the fifth round of the 2016 NFL Draft out of West Alabama. He has been a valuable asset in the passing game, the Chiefs rushing attack and special teams. He recorded 58 receptions, 860 yards (14.8 yards per catch) and seven touchdowns. Hill’s speed and route running are two of the best assets he displays game in and game out. His yards per catch numbers have improved every season he’s been in the league. He also has had no more than five dropped passes in his career thus far.
Hill signed a three-year, $54 million (with $35 million guaranteed) deal in 2019 that pairs him with the Chiefs up through the end of the 2022 season when he will be an unrestricted free agent. Hill is stuck in the middle here because the next guy they really need to sign to a long term deal is Travis Kelce, but Hill is arguably the bigger threat. That being said, Kelce is a more traditional and consistent target whereas Hill’s value is in his boom-or-bust downfield abilities. Will the Chiefs continue to value that production — assuming it’s still high in three years — or will Hill be replaced by cheaper options in the draft, something Kansas City was prepared to do when it was unclear if he’d be suspended in 2019 for off-field issues. If there’s a guy the Chiefs need to pay who is most likely to walk for a monster deal elsewhere, it’s Hill. Three more years with Mahomes could mean three more Super Bowls, which isn’t a bad thing to cash out with.
He’s locked in for the few seasons, but it’s hard to believe he would receive another big payday in the $70-90 million range from the Chiefs.
