8. Baker Mayfield, Cleveland Browns

Through two seasons in the NFL, Mayfield is impossible to pinpoint. On the one hand, he’s immensely talented and has not been a disaster for the long downtrodden franchise. On the other, he’s far from delivered on expectations set by his top draft pick status. A 12-17 record, 7,500 passing yards,49 touchdowns and 35 interceptions prove all of those facts.

Is Year 3 critical for the former No. 1 overall selection? Absolutely. The Browns offense is loaded and the offensive line is much-improved from a season ago. For now, Mayfield stays in the middle of the conference, and will certainly move up or down quickly into the season.

7. Cam Newton, New England Patriots

The Patriots have remained publicly noncommittal to free-agent acquisition quarterback Cam Newton, and even some in the media have fallen for the bait and decided second-year quarterback Jarrett Stidham could actually beat out the former NFL MVP for the starting job.

Newton is a vastly superior NFL quarterback and by the time August ends, that will be abundantly clear to all interested parties. Newton is healthy, appears hungry, and is going to have a very good season for New England.

Still, he won’t be returning to his MVP self – those days are long gone. Middle of the pack feels about right for the former Carolina Panther.
