49ers might not have to trade Raheem Mostert after all
By Scott Rogust
Raheem Mostert isn’t going to be house hunting this year.
Everything was coming up great for the San Francisco 49ers this offseason, thanks to the addition of tackle Trent Williams to help solidify the team’s offensive line. But, the 49ers suffered a scare after running back Raheem Mostert demanded a trade once contract extension negotiations went nowhere. As it turns out, a trade may not be on the horizon after all during this NFL year.
According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Mostert talked to a “high-ranking member of the 49ers organization” to end the discrepancy and get on the same page. Mostert’s agent, Brett Tessler, expressed confidence that both sides can come to an agreement soon.
Mostert looked to cash in after a strong 2019 season
When it comes to the head coach Kyle Shanahan’s offense, you can never have enough running backs. The team had the likes of Tevin Coleman, Matt Breida and Jeff Wilson carrying the rock last season, but no one was more effective than Mostert.
In the regular-season, Mostert tallied 772 rushing yards and eight touchdowns on on 137 carries (5.6 yards per carry). While those stats were great, they didn’t compare to the amount of damage Mostert did to opposing defenses in the playoffs. In his three playoff performances, Mostert rushed for 336 yards and five scores on 53 carries (6.3 yards/carry). Mostert’s greatest masterpiece came against the Green Bay Packers in the NFC Championship Game, where he singlehandedly stomped all over their defense for 220 yards and four touchdowns.
Given the amount of success Mostert had in the most important games of the season, he was looking to cash in on a new deal. The thing is, the veteran just signed a three-year, $8.7 million extension back in 2019. Even though Mostert wants a higher salary, the 49ers won’t have to pay him top running back money. Maybe an extra few millions per year could get a deal done.
It seems like both parties are looking to avoid conflict. Well, for now anyway.
