The St. Louis Cardinals could swoop right in and sign Dietrich after the Reds essentially gave up on him.

The Cardinals have a bit more space in the outfield for Dietrich and he could also get time in the infield in a backup role. The schedule is NL Central-heavy and adding a veteran from within the division could serve as a boost.

One thing Cardinals fans may worry about is Dietrich taking playing time away from young players such as Dylan Carlson or Tyler O’Neill. Yet this is once again an addition for depth and potential emergency. Relying on young players may not be as easy as it sounds during such an odd year with so few games and no fans in the stands.

Dietrich could also get time as the designated hitter or play in place of Matt Carpenter at times if the veteran has another down year like he did in 2019. There is also the fact Dietrich could help in the 10 games against the Reds this season. Any extra insights on opposing pitching is never a bad thing.

The Cardinals don’t need Dietrich. However, things can change fast this year and a talented veteran who can play nearly any position would be a great gain right before the season.
