The Kansas City Royals might have something in Bobby Witt Jr.

The Kansas City Royals lost over 100 games last year, and Mike Matheny’s bunch might not have a ton of championship prospects ahead of the 2020 season. However, there is still plenty of reason to tune in to Royals games. In addition to Jorge Soler mashing home runs, the Royals have one of the game’s top prospects in Bobby Witt Jr.

Witt, who was picked No. 2 overall in the 2019 MLB Draft, figured to hold down a starting spot on the left side of the infield in Kansas City for the next decade. Royals fans got quite the nice preview of Witt’s future in a scrimmage against the Houston Astros, as Witt reached base four times, including this sharp base hit.

Bobby Witt Jr. could follow in his dad’s footsteps.

Witt’s dad, Bobby Witt Sr., was a hard-throwing right-hander who made 397 starts, 269 of which came with the Texas Rangers, in his 16-year MLB career. The Royals star pupil himself figured to breeze through the minor leagues without much of a hold-up, as his bat control, power, and glove at third is already well above where most 20-year-olds are.

While Witt is likely not going to see a ton of time at the major league level this season, that shouldn’t dampen all the hype around him, as the Royals, who have been stuck in the mud over the last few seasons due to a lack of star power, have someone who can carry this team for the next decade in Witt fermenting in the minors.

Witt’s dad was a solid pitcher for nearly two decades in the big leagues, but his son might have enough talent to accomplish much more than just a long, serviceable career. If he continues to get stronger and fine-tune his game, the Royals might’ve landed one of the game’s brightest young stars. Between Witt and former Texas A&M lefty Asa Lacy, drafted No. 4 overall in 2020, the future in Kansas City is so bright they have to wear shades.
