Should D’Eriq King have better Heisman odds than Jamie Newman, Trey Sermon?

D’Eriq King has the best Heisman odds of any transfer, but should he?

D’Eriq King, Jamie Newman and Trey Sermon are some the top players to transfer this offseason.

King leaves the Houston Cougars for his shot to lead a Power 5 team in the Miami Hurricanes to the promised land. Newman goes from an unsung ACC team in the Wake Forest Demon Deacons to the presumptive starter for the SEC powerhouse Georgia Bulldogs. Sermon swaps College Football Playoff contenders, going from the Oklahoma Sooners to the Ohio State Buckeyes.

FOX College Football tweeted out the five transfer players with the best odds to take home a Heisman Trophy in their first year on a new team. King leads the way at +1200. Newman is second  at +2220. Sermon comes in third at +3300. Mississippi State Bulldogs quarterback K.J. Costello is fourth at +5000. TCU Horned Frogs wide receiver JD Spielman comes in fifth at +10000.

D’Eriq King and Jamie Newman are serious Heisman Trophy contenders.

King, Newman and Sermon are among the many excellent players to transfer the year who could be the most impactful. We also may want to keep an eye on the former AAC Defensive Player of the Year in defensive lineman Quincy Roche, who is now teammates with King down in Miami. That pass rush featuring Roche and Gregory Rousseau is going to be absolutely filthy. Miami is on the rise.

Earlier in the offseason, Newman would have been the clearest choice of this bunch to win the Heisman Trophy as a transfer quarterback. However, that narrative has changed because he was joined by former USC Trojans signal-caller JT Daniels in the UGA quarterback room in May. Daniels was granted immediate eligibility, as he will battle Newman for the Georgia starting job in 2020.

As for Sermon, he may be the most impactful offensive player of this group because he’ll be playing on undoubtedly the best team. He’ll be the one receiving handoffs from probable Heisman frontrunner Justin Fields up in Ohio State. Sermon may win the Doak Walker over Clemson’s Travis Etienne or Oklahoma State’s Chuba Hubbard, but he’s not winning the Heisman Trophy.

While it would be cool to see the former Nebraska Cornhuskers wideout take home college football’s top individual honor, let’s start with the Fred Biletnikoff Award first for Spielman. TCU has its shot at being this year’s Baylor Bears in the Big 12. We know Gary Patterson’s defense is solid. Maybe adding Spielman and freshman running back Zachary Evans gets TCU over the top?

As for going off the board, Costello might be seriously underrated here at +5000. He was an excellent player when he was healthy for the Pac-12’s Stanford Cardinal. Costello now joins Mike Leach’s Air Raid offense in Starkville. Quarterbacks like Anthony Gordon, Gardner Minshew and Luke Falk have shined in this system most recently. Why count out Costello this soon for it?

Ultimately, King should have the best odds to win the Heisman of any transfer player for two reasons: One, he plays the right position on a team that is good enough to play in a conference championship game. And two, he doesn’t have as stiff of a competition in the quarterback room as Newman has with Daniels now at Georgia. King’s pathway to New York City is a feasible one.

King is the favorite among the transfers, but Newman and Costello are contenders too.
