2021 NFL mock draft: Justin Fields heads to Jaguars
The Buccaneers may have a Super Bowl ready offense after making significant investments there during the 2020 offseason. So, during 2021, the team should shift focus to the defensive side of the ball. This only makes sense if they believe that quarterback Tom Brady will stick around for a few more years, but we’re going to say that he will and look to the other side of the ball.
Given the wide receiver depth, Miami edge rusher Greg Rousseau drops all the way to 15th in this mock draft, despite being the best edge rusher in the draft in 2021. Rousseau has tremendous moves to beat offensive linemen off the ball and get into the backfield, and also excels at setting an edge to work in run support.
As a bonus, the Hurricane product is also a great team leader – someone to help solidify a defensive identity in Tampa. The Bucs should be very happy with this pick.
North Dakota State quarterback Trey Lance is going to be a media darling in the lead-up to the 2021 NFL Draft. And, in all likelihood, his combine skills showings and interviews will push him up draft boards and he’ll go long before 16 if that is the case. But, the Raiders still make perfect sense as a destination – whether they’re drafting earlier or trade up to take him.
Now that the Raiders feature plenty of offensive weapons – it is about to become abundantly clear that neither Derek Carr or Marcus Mariota are talented enough to be Super Bowl-contending quarterbacks. We don’t expect general manager Mike Mayock or head coach Jon Gruden to give either more time, so look for them to target a signal-caller in the 2021 Draft.
Lance lacks film against top-level talent, but that won’t deter Gruden from falling in love with his intangibles. Lance is quick, smart and strong-armed in all the right ways to run NFL offenses. Gruden falls in love, and Las Vegas gets a new poster child to help build fan support in their new city.
