MLB Playoffs: 4 teams that would benefit from a 16-team playoff
By Scott Rogust
The Toronto Blue Jays have arguably the brightest future in the entire league. A playoff appearance wasn’t really in the cards for 2020, considering they share residency in the AL East with the powerhouse New York Yankees and Tampa Bay Rays. But now with three more teams being added to the AL side of the bracket, this could be the Blue Jays’ year.
Toronto’s batting order looks insane on paper, as Vlad Guerrero Jr., Bo Bichette, and Cavan Biggio will hit in three of the top four spots. The Blue Jays added former Boston Red Sox third baseman Travis Shaw in the offseason on a one-year flyer, who is entering the perfect situation to try and bounce back from his down year with the Milwaukee Brewers.
The Blue Jays’ big get this winter was former Los Angeles Dodger pitcher and 2019 NL Cy Young runner-up in Hyun-Jin Ryu, who just last season recorded an impressive 2.52 ERA and 1.02 WHIP. Ryu will be the number one pitcher in the rotation, followed by Matt Shoemaker and Anthony Kay.
Perhaps Toronto’s biggest hurdle for the 2020 season is where they’ll actually play their home games. Luckily, they start off the season on the road in Tampa Bay before they can make an official decision by their first home series. But, if there’s any team built to deal with this adversity, it’s the Blue Jays.
Toronto will make the 16-team postseason. Book it.
