Sam Coonrod won’t kneel for anything except God.

San Francisco Giants’ Sam Coonrod was noticeably standing during the Giants season opener in Los Angeles on Thursday and now, we know why he made the choice to stand.

“I’m a Christian,” he said of his statement (h/t TMZ). “So I just believe that I can’t kneel before anything besides God.”

Coonrod’s teammates knelt in a sign of solidarity for the Black Lives Matter movement. Coonrod explained why that movement is not something he wants to support wholly.

Sam Coonrod does not agree with the Black Lives Matter movement

“I just can’t get on board with a couple things I’ve read about Black Lives Matter, how they lean towards Marxism,” Coonrod said. “And … they said some negative things about the nuclear family. I just can’t get on board with that.”

He also wants the respect he gives to those who kneel, from those who don’t agree with his actions.

“I’m not mad at someone who decided to kneel. I just don’t think it’s too much to ask that I just get the same respect.”

The Giants would go on to lose the game, 8-0.
