Lorenzo Cain showed why he’s one of the smartest players in baseball on Saturday

The Milwaukee Brewers had an MLB Opening Day to forget on Friday, as they only managed to record three hits against Chicago Cubs starter Kyle Hendricks. Licking their wounds, the Brewers were determined to get some semblance of revenge on their NL Central rivals.

Outfielder Lorenzo Cain accomplished that by straight-up embarrassing the Cubs infield. Don’t believe us? Just watch for yourself.

Breaking down Cain flawlessly escaping a Cubs rundown

In the top of the second inning, Brewers outfielder managed to hit a grounder to second base, at the exact spot Cain was standing. Cain looked to be stuck between a rock and a hard place (Kris Bryant and Javier Baez, to be exact) and looked to be a sure out. Cain managed to skate back and forth, and found an opening to return to second base.

The thing is, Gamel was standing on second! That’s when Cain showed off his IQ by directing Gamel to return to first, because Anthony Rizzo stepped away from the bag to cover home plate! After all that excitement, the Brewers escaped sure disaster and all baserunners were deemed safe.

To make matters that much sweeter for Milwaukee, they walked away with a run after third baseman Eric Sogard brought Cain home on an RBI single to tie the game up at one run apiece.

This is why Cain gets paid the big bucks by the Brewers. As for the Cubs, manager David Ross might have to work on the fundamentals to make sure they don’t get caught in a compromising position like this again.
