The Giants could replace Aldrick Rosas with Stephen Gostkowski.

The New York Giants have had an unusually turbulent offseason due to some run-ins with the law. While the robbery case surrounding cornerback and former first-round pick DeAndre Baker is in the spotlight, and deservedly so, kicker Aldrick Rosas also found himself in trouble with law enforcement. The Giants have deemed those troubles too much for a below-average kicker.

Just two years removed from being named a Pro Bowler, Rosas has been cut after being charged with three misdemeanors stemming from a hit and run in the offseason. Despite hiring a special teams coach as their new head man in Joe Judge, New York’s kicking and punting remains among the worst in the league.

Former New England Patriots kicker Stephen Gostkowski, still unemployed as of this moment, seems like a perfect fit for a subpar Giants special teams unit.

The Giants need to sign Stephen Gostkowski because of his pedigree.

Gostkowski was let go by New England after 13 years of service, which helped New England bring home three Super Bowl rings. Gostkowski is the team’s all-time leader in points and made field goals, and he nailed 27 of his 32 field goals in 2018, the last season he was fully healthy. It goes without saying that is a massive upgrade over the inconsistent Rosas.

Gostkowski’s familiarity with Judge could be what ends up sweetening the deal. With Judge as a special teams coach in New England over the last eight seasons, Gostkowski was named to three Pro Bowls and two All-Pro teams. That’s certainly an improvement over a player who made just 12 field goals last year.

The Patriots might have discarded Gostkowski in favor of Justin Rohrwasser in turning the page on a new era, but the Giants should pounce on him before another kicker-needy team scoops him up. Doing so could help them challenge for a winning record in 2020.
