NFL: 5 most likely teams to reach the AFC Championship game
By John Buhler
They’re not giving up their late owner’s trophy namesake without a fight.
Of course, the Kansas City Chiefs are the favorite to not only get to the AFC Championship game in January, but are the favorites to repeat as Super Bowl champions. Surely, you can ask any member of Chiefs Kingdom how many Super Bowls they’re going to win this decade and you’ll get any variation from seven to 10. Let’s pump the brakes, enjoy No. 1 and work hard towards No. 2.
Kansas City has the best player in football in quarterback Patrick Mahomes. The Chiefs also have the best offensive-minded coach in the sport in Andy Reid. General manager Brett Veach has quickly emerged as one of the very best in his field, and we know how great of owners the Hunt Family are for this football team. The Chiefs get A’s in all four fronts, so they can totally repeat.
However, they will get better competition out of the AFC West this year. Surely, at least one of their three rivals will be Wild Card-caliber. While the Chiefs recognize teams like the Baltimore Ravens and the New England Patriots as real threats, they must embrace life as the hunted now. They will get everyone’s best fight this year when they meet on the gridiron. We all know that.
Simply put, Kansas City should win around 11 or 12 games this fall, win the AFC West again and get to play in the AFC title bout as a top-two seed. If they lose on the road to Baltimore or drop it at home, that’s football for you. Anything short of an NFL final four appearance will not be acceptable for the reigning Super Bowl champions. Fortunately, they will play for the Lamar Hunt.
