Following a long and successful playing career, Walter Zenga’s time as a coach has been considerably less celebrated, something that Cagliari’s middling form since he took over from Rolando Maran in March has done little to change. The club’s season had already been marred prior to Zenga’s arrival by further reports of racist chanting at the Sardegna Arena.
Juventus may have secured a ninth successive Serie A title, setting a record for the big five European leagues in the process, but the beautiful play that Maurizio Sarri’s arrival was supposed to bring with it has been in conspicuously short supply.
The league win has been much more in the spirit of Max Allegri’s functional approach than the freewheeling play we saw from Sarri’s Napoli sides, which has naturally led people to question the wisdom of replacing Allegri in the first place.
So despite Juve’s continuing domestic success, there’s been plenty of speculation that failure to go deep in the Champions League could mean that Sarri won’t even be at the club by the start of next season.
