USC football should land this stud inside linebacker

One of the hottest names in Pac-12 recruiting that remains unsigned at this point is 4-star inside linebacker Ethan Calvert. In addition to USC, the No. 72 overall prospect and No. 3 player at his position according to the 247Sports Composite rankings has heavy interest from Utah, Washington and UCLA as well. And looking at what he offers, it’s not hard to see why.

A converted safety, Calvert measures in at 6-foot-3 and 230 pounds and has a frame that could add even a little more muscle. When you watch him play, though, that’s not a total necessity as he has an uncanny ability to deliver quite a pop on the ball-carrier. He also offers great speed and instincts at the position, showcasing his safety-like ability with the way he moves downhill, sideline-to-sideline and in coverage.

His background as a safety means he offers a ton of versatility and could fill different roles on defense for USC, though they need inside linebacker help. They have just one true player at the position on the roster right now, though they have already signed four recruits in the 2021 class at the position.

Despite that, Calvert would be the best of the bunch by a wide margin and offer the most upside. That promise of potentially immediate playing time upon his arrival at USC could be the deciding factor and, as of right now, the Trojans appear to be the favorite to land his services. For this defense to continue turning around, they need to make sure Calvert is ready to Fight On.
