The New York Mets outfielder no-showed the team’s Sunday matinee

The drama in MLB has done nothing but grow this past week, as the league continues to navigate through the coronavirus pandemic. There have been outbreaks and player opt-outs due to concerns over the spread of COVID-19. On Sunday, the New York Mets dealt with their own scare after discovering that outfielder Yoenis Cespedes failed to report to Truist Park ahead of their game against the Atlanta Braves.

With Mets fans understandably concerned, the team told various members of the media that the outfielder is “in good health,” and they “have no reason to believe Yoenis’ safety is at risk.” Additionally, Bob Nightengale of USA TODAY  reports that the absence wasn’t COVID-19 related and that Cespedes has not told the team whether he’s opting-out for the season.

While it’s great to hear that Cespedes’ well-being is fine, everyone is still puzzled as to why he went AWOL on the Mets.

While Cespedes is fine, his reason for not reporting to team is still a mystery

After the team discovered that Cespedes was nowhere to be found at the stadium, general manager Brodie Van Wagenen said they tried to reach out to him a number of times, but to no avail. That’s scary, especially considering the Mets are on the road in Atlanta, with Georgia seeing spikes in new COVID-19 cases over the past month.

This isn’t the first time the Mets have had a player fail to report to the team on game day. Back in 2017, former ace pitcher Matt Harvey didn’t show up to Citi Field, forcing the team to send two personnel members to his apartment to check up on his well-being.

Through eight games this season, Cespedes has hit two home runs and four RBI, while slashing .161/.235/.387.

It’s great news to hear that Cespedes’ health is secure during this time, but the conspicuous update leaves many of us wondering why on Earth he pulled a no-show on the team, especially in a contract year. We’ll continue to provide you with updates on Cespedes’ whereabouts and potential punishment once we receive official word from the team or player himself.
