5 college football players under the most pressure in 2020
By John Buhler
The pressure is really amped up here with this trio of quarterbacks.
At some point, Jim Harbaugh needs to win a Big Ten East division title and get his alma mater’s football program to Indianapolis. Though the Ohio State Buckeyes are a better program historically than the Michigan Wolverines, Harbaugh is running out of time and excuses not to get it done against their arch-rival. Will Dylan McCaffrey be the quarterback he can finally win big with?
As expected, McCaffrey has grown up surrounded by pressure. His dad is a three-time Super Bowl champion in Ed McCaffrey, while his older brother Christian McCaffrey is an All-Pro running back for the Carolina Panthers. Before J.J. McCarthy arrives in January, McCaffrey must prove he’s more like Chad Henne in Ann Arbor than he is like Shea Patterson. This year, it’s boom or bust for him.
Jamie Newman must realize he’s not in Winston-Salem, North Carolina anymore. Not only did he upgrade with his team from the Wake Forest Demon Deacons to the Georgia Bulldogs, but he upgraded in level of competition as well from the ACC to the SEC. He may be some variation of Cam Newton or Jalen Hurts for Georgia. Newman could also hold a clipboard as a grad transfer.
Yes, Newman will be challenged for the starting job by redshirt sophomore JT Daniels, who transferred from USC back in May. Newman should beat out Daniels for the starting job, but Daniels will be seen as the best backup quarterback in the country. With 40 years of not winning a national title forever on Dawg Nation’s mind, how sure are we Newman has what it takes here?
Without question, the quarterback who faces the most pressure this season is incumbent Alabama Crimson Tide starter Mac Jones. He got to play out the last few games of the 2019 campaign after Tua Tagovailoa succumbed to a season-ending hip injury. Jones was fine as the Alabama starter, but he hasn’t proven to be on-par with Greg McElroy from yesteryear Alabama.
Jones cannot be the reason Alabama doesn’t dominate SEC play. If his ceiling is as definite as we believe it is, Alabama will lose a game or two in a 10-game SEC slate. He’s no Tagovailoa and never will be. However, if he can’t beat a team like Georgia or LSU, then perhaps true freshman Bryce Young will get his shot? It’s not like head coach Nick Saban is getting any younger either.
