Seahawks QB Russell Wilson is poised to win his first NFL MVP in 2020
It’s hard to believe, but Russell Wilson has yet to win NFL MVP during his eight years in the league.
Russell Wilson has been one of the most consistent quarterbacks in the NFL since the Seattle Seahawks took him in the third round (75th overall) in the 2012 NFL Draft. He’s started all 16 regular-season games in all eight of his years in the pros and year after year finishes as one of the top-performing signal-callers.
With all of that said though, Wilson hasn’t been named NFL MVP once throughout the course of his career and that’s surprising for sure. He won a Super Bowl in just his second NFL season and went to the big game again in year three (and lost because the Seahawks opted to throw the ball rather than run it at the goal line).
Wilson might not have won MVP yet, but armed with a new contract at age 31, he’s shown no signs of slowing down and 2020 very well could be his year to be named the NFL’s Most Valuable Player.
Nate Burleson said on Good Morning Football that Russell Wilson was his pick to win MVP in 2020 and it’s not an outlandish prediction at all
Burleson notes in that clip that Wilson has yet to receive a single MVP vote, which is surprising, but true. Even in 2017 when the former NC State and Wisconsin quarterback threw for just shy of 4,000 yards and a career-high 34 touchdowns, it wasn’t enough to get him the MVP, as Tom Brady won it that year instead.
MVP normally does go to the best player every year, but the NFL definitely likes to give it to a different player every year and with Wilson not yet having won it, 2020 would be as good a time as any, since Patrick Mahomes and Lamar Jackson each have one already and they’d be the favorites to win it otherwise.
If the Seahawks are able to win the NFC West, it wouldn’t be an easy road for them. That division is stacked with talent with the NFC defending champion 49ers giving them all they could handle last year as well as the 2018 NFC champion Rams and the surging Cardinals. That gives the Seahawks six incredibly tough games and Wilson is going to have to take charge and lead the way in those six games.
Wilson has the talent surrounding him to help him get to that pinnacle, including running back Chris Carson, wide receivers Tyler Lockett and D.K. Metcalf and newly-signed tight end Greg Olsen.
If he can lead the Seahawks to an NFC West title and get his Hawks back to the Super Bowl for the first time since the 2013 season, Russell Wilson has to be a lock as an MVP candidate.
