1. Offensive line continues to progress

In 2018, the Houston Texans managed to make the playoffs and win the AFC South despite the fact the starting quarterback Deshaun Watson was sacked an NFL-high 63 times. Things didn’t get any better in a 21-7 home playoff setback to the rival Indianapolis Colts as the young signal-caller was dropped three more times in the loss.

Last offseason, the club addressed the offensive front in numerous ways. They gave up plenty to get standout left tackle Laremy Tunsil from the Miami Dolphins in a trade that also netted wide receiver Kenny Stills. They used a first- and second-round pick on line prospects Tytus Howard (Alabama State) and Max Scharping (Northern Illinois), respectively. The former made just eight starts last season and battled injuries while Scharping played in every game as a rookie, making a combined 16 starts (including playoffs).

Still, Houston surrendered 49 sacks in 2020 and Watson was dropped 44 times. But the three-year was sacked a combined 11 times in the playoff split with the Bills and Chiefs. There’s still work to be done here and a little more cohesion could go a long way.
