Matt Nagy has tied his fate to quarterback Mitchell Trubisky, through and through. However, this year is slightly different as the team acquired Super Bowl LII MVP Nick Foles as a provisional plan at quarterback if Trubisky flounders. Heck, Trubisky may not make it out of training camp as the team’s starter.

Barring a rookie standout somewhere in the NFL during training camps, the Bears are the only team in the NFL entering the season with a bonafide quarterback battle. There is a nagging suspicion that if Chicago does not make the right choice (or if that choice isn’t any good), Matt Nagy will be unemployed to start the 2021 offseason.

Nagy and the Bears won 12 games in 2018, Nagy’s maiden voyage. Unfortunately, they were snakebitten by a Cody Parkey missed field goal at home in the playoffs. The following season, Trubisky took a step backward in his development, and the Bears finished 8-8.

The time is now for Nagy. He is reputationally an offense-first coach and must transform Trubisky or Foles into formidable passers. Or at the very least, create terrific game-managers.

Otherwise, the Bears likely seek their next franchise quarterback in the 2021 NFL Draft or inquire about the services of men like Alex Smith or Derek Carr, who could seek new destinations in March.
