Texas football: 5 breakout players to watch in 2020
By John Buhler
Can the Longhorns passing game fly like an eagle with Brennan Eagles becoming a star in the Lone Star State? Eagles is coming off a strong sophomore season with Texas, as he had 32 catches for 522 yards and six touchdowns. At 6-foot-4 and 229 pounds, the Houston, Texas native has the frame necessary to become an even bigger target for Sam Ehlinger in 2020.
Eagles has the potential to be an all-conference player this year for Texas. Keep in mind how many prolific receivers come out of Big 12 country. To be among the very best wideouts in the Big 12 has and always will mean something. What will mean even more is if Eagles is the reason the Longhorns dethrone rival Oklahoma as the preeminent program in the Big 12 this season.
It’ll be Eagles’ third year catching passes from Ehlinger. While the dual-threat quarterback for the Longhorns might be a better runner than a thrower at this point, you simply cannot deny the rapport he has with plenty of excellent receivers at Texas. Look for Eagles to approach the equivalent of 1,000 yards in this 10-game, coronavirus-shortened college football season.
As with Bijan Robinson and Joseph Ossai, Eagles stands the chance to be a big beneficiary of the Big 12 going forward with its season for now. There will be more eyes on Texas football this season with the Big Ten and the Pac-12 punting on playing this fall. Texas might have been on the way back this year anyway, but it’s an even bigger stage for Eagles than he even realizes.
