Texas football: 5 breakout players to watch in 2020
By John Buhler
As with Robinson at running back, Texas has another former five-star talent looking to cement his legacy in the Longhorns offense. After using a redshirt in 2019, wide receiver Jordan Whittington looks to live up to his lofty recruiting status in his season year with the Texas football program.
According to the 247Sports Composite, Whittington was the No. 34 overall player in the 2019 recruiting class, the No. 2 athlete and the No. 6 player from Texas. At 6-foot-1 and 209 pounds, Texas recognized his raw talent and it was decided he’d be best used as a receiver in Tom Herman’s offense. A groin injury he suffered back in high school resurfaced and was redshirted.
Whittington may only have two catches for 17 yards in his Texas career up to this point, but he still has four years of eligibility to work with. With a solid supporting cast around him in Sam Ehlinger at quarterback, Brennan Eagles also at receiver and Robinson in the backfield, Whittington stands to benefit from playing alongside some excellent top-tier college football talent.
While Whittington’s true breakout season may be coming in 2021, having a year on the Austin campus under his belt, as well as a frustrating true freshman campaign, could serve as motivation for him to live up to his lofty status as a blue-chip prosecute coming out of high school. Texas is expecting big things out of him, but will Whittington live up to it in his redshirt freshman year?
