The San Francisco 49ers‘ revamped secondary is a really puzzling unit to examine. While the performances of Richard Sherman at cornerback and the terrific safety tandem of Jimmie Ward and Jaquiski Tartt were both major reasons San Francisco was able to go from 3-13 to the Super Bowl, that secondary could stand to add one more player. Ahkello Witherspoon has been solid but uninspiring outside, while Jason Verrett is too injury-prone to rely on. The rest of the NFC elite upgraded, while San Francisco decided to mostly run it back in 2020. Adding King could be that one move that helps turn the tide of the division.

A secondary led by Sherman, King and K’Wuan Williams in Robert Saleh’s zone-heavy scheme would be ideal for both King as a player and the 49ers’ defense as a whole. The Niners traded three picks to move up six spots in the 2020 draft and are fresh off of trading for Trent Williams, so John Lynch has shown he has no problem parting with picks if the price is right.
