Von Miller & the Pass Rush

Despite all of the investments in the team’s offense, its’ true identity has been and will continue to be in the pass rush. That starts with All-Pro edge rusher Von Miller, who in a down year in 2019 still put up eight sacks and made the Pro Bowl.

In nine seasons since the Broncos made him the second-overall pick in the 2010 draft, Miller has failed to reach double digit sacks in only two seasons. One was 2019, and other was 2013 when he only played in nine games.

And Miller is going to be aided in a big way by the return of his number one running mate, Bradley Chubb. After recording 12 sacks as a rookie in 2018, the former fifth overall draft pick played in only four games in ’19 and was placed on injured reserve after that. With Chubb back in the fold, we should expect the pass rusher to resemble the ’18 iteration which saw Miller add 14.5 sacks to Chubb’s total, and the Denver pass rush was among the best in the NFL.

And the duo will become a trio in 2020 – as the team also made a huge trade to acquire five time Pro Bowler defensive tackle Jurrell Casey, who not only improves but massively upgrades the team’s defensive line.

If Casey is the player the Broncos brought him in to be – the team should have the best pass rush in the entire NFL. When that is true – when the team returns to the defense that won them the Super Bowl in 2016 – they’ll be a legitimate force in the AFC, and the NFL.
