Florida football: 5 breakout players to watch in 2020
By John Buhler
Trevon Grimes enters his senior season out of St. Thomas Aquinas in Fort Lauderdale. Initially, the four-star recruit committed to play for the Ohio State Buckeyes up in the Big Ten, but opted to transfer back home after only playing two games in 2017. Now in year three with the Gators, look for Grimes to make things easier in Kyle Trask’s first full season as the starter.
Grimes is a big body receiver at 6-foot-5 and 214 pounds. He had 33 catches for 491 yards and three touchdowns as a redshirt sophomore last season. This brings his Florida receiving totals to 59 catches for 855 yards and five touchdown grabs in two seasons in Gainesville. Though a 1,000-yard season probably isn’t happening in an 10-game, conference-only season, he should do fine.
The growing continuity between Grimes and Trask in the passing game could be the spark that leads to Florida beating the SEC East division rival Georgia Bulldogs for the first time since 2016. The winner of that rivalry game over in Jacksonville has gone on to win the SEC East each of the last five seasons. Look for that to be no different in 2020, as both of these teams will be good.
Grimes may be more of the deep-ball, go-up-and-get it receiving type, but that should make for interesting passing situations on third-and-long for the Gators. If Grimes can get to roughly 750 receiving yards and five touchdown catches, that could be enough to help get Florida to Atlanta for the first time since the 2016 campaign. He needs to have a big year for the Gators.
