Barcelona fans hoping to see Luis Suarez feature for Ronald Koeman need to give up on that dream. The new manager does not see a future for the forward.

Luis Suarez and Lionel Messi have powered the Barcelona front line together for the last six seasons. The dynamic duo won’t be given a seventh campaign to delight fans at Camp Nou. New Barcelona boss Ronald Koeman is making it abundantly clear that Suarez is not a part of his future plans.

For the record, the Uruguayan striker is more than happy to extend his stay with the club. He made that statement in a wide-ranging interview with El Pais. The problem is that he also revealed that he’s not spoken to Koeman since his installation as the new Barcelona manager.

Needless to say, that doesn’t bode well for Suarez’s future with the club.

Suarez did struggle a bit with injuries last season and, at the age of 33, he’s certainly getting close to the end of his career. On the other hand, he also poured in 16 league goals for Barcelona last season. Koeman and the higher-ups at the club will have to find a player capable of replacing Suarez’s production if they want to right the ship next season.

If Barcelona do elect to sell Suarez, expect a lot of European clubs to register interest in the prolific forward. Ajax would love to bring him back into the fold to finish his career. It’s unclear whether or not Suarez would be interested in taking such a step back in terms of league quality. It’s possible he could want to play another season or two in one of Europe’s premier leagues to prove he can still score at a high level.

The potential interest in Suarez’s services will allow Barcelona to secure a reasonable transfer fee when they do sell him. It won’t be enough to fund the purchase of a striker capable of immediately giving the club double-digit goals. Selling Suarez may accelerate the club’s rebuild, but it could also weaken the side’s attack in the short-term.
