Browns safety Grant Delpit carted off with potential season-ending injury
Cleveland Browns rookie Grant Delpit was carted off the field at practice on Monday and his rookie season may be over before it even really started.
Grant Delpit’s rookie season with the Cleveland Browns may be over before it had a chance to begin.
The 2020 second-rounder was carted off the Browns practice field on Monday, according to beat writers who witnessed the injury.
Having a player carted off the field is worrying enough, but early indications don’t look good for Delpit. He was seen laying on his stomach and “pounding the ground,” according to Browns beat writer Mary Kay Cabot.
Grant Delpit may have suffered an Achilles injury at Browns camp
Video on the NFL Network appeared to show Delpit “grabbing his calf/Achilles area,” tweeted Mike Garafolo.
Delpit is undergoing testing for what is feared to be an Achilles injury, according to Adam Schefter.
Achilles is the last word you want to hear whenever a player goes down. Injuries in that region tend to require significant time out.
The disappointment for Delpit and the Browns will be immense if he has to miss some or most of the season, especially because the early phase of his career had been so promising.
Delpit was selected in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft out of LSU. Though young, the 6-foot-2, 213-pound safety was already pushing Browns veterans for a starting job. He had even begun taking first-team reps at both safety spots last week, per reports from practice.
His performances were a continuation of his college achievements. He was a two-time consensus All-American and the 2019 winner of the Jim Thorpe Award as the nation’s top defensive back. His work in the secondary helped the Tigers win the national championship.
This is the latest tough injury for the Browns to deal with on defense since practices resumed. Cornerback Kevin Johnson suffered a lacerated liver, putting a hold on a promising offseason. Linebacker Mack Wilson hyperextended his knee and is unlikely to start the season on time.
