Seth Romero is out with a bizarre injury

Washington Nationals pitcher Seth Romero recently made his MLB debut. The pitcher has been a top prospect in the organization since being a first-round pick in 2017 and was given a shot in 2020.

He got off to a rough start in three games and his season only got worse over the weekend. The southpaw suffered a nasty injury that didn’t even occur on the diamond.

Seth Romero’s had a rough start to his career

Romero was drafted by the Nationals in 2017 and at the Class-A level that season. He was at the same level in 2018 and only made seven appearances before undergoing Tommy John surgery. Thus, he missed all of 2019 and made the huge jump from Class-A to MLB in 2020. Now he is out again with a freak injury.

The left-hander posted a 13.50 ERA in his three appearances this season, allowing four runs in 2.2 innings of work. Any development he planned on making may be put on hold until 2021 considering the regular season is over in a month.

The fact the break is in his non-throwing hand is a good sign. He can still throw in some capacity while he recovers and he is also not going through the grueling rehab he just completed after his Tommy John surgery.

This injury just adds to the rough start for the defending World Series champions. The Nationals enter Monday with a record of 11-14, but are still just 3.5 games out of first place in a National League East division where no team has played the same amount of games.

Romero’s career is not in danger, but he needs some sort of reset in 2021. He has a total of 14 minor league appearances and pitched in three MLB games before suffering this injury. It may be best for the former first-round pick to get more time in the minors before being rushed back. His debut is out of the way and now he can return to just focusing on getting a normal workload in next season.
