Things got a little dicey there between Rob Manfred and Brodie Van Wagenen

Rob Manfred sent out a statement over the Brodie Van Wagenen allegation.

The MLB commissioner was accused of proposing a social justice stunt of having the players in the Miami Marlins vs. the New York Mets game on Thursday night take the field, protest and leave, then come back in an hour and play ball. This rumor came to light when the Mets general manager was caught on a hot mic talking about the stunt and how patently ludicrous it was.

Manfred recuses himself of any wrongdoing in the embarrassing situation.

Manfred’s statement reads as follows. “Over the past two days, players on a number of Clubs have decided not to play games. I have said both publicly and privately that I respect those decisions and support the need to address social justice.”

“I have not attempted in any way to prevent players from expressing themselves by not playing, nor have I suggested any alternative form of protest to any Club personnel or player. Any suggestion to the contrary is wrong.”

Van Wagenen believed the suggestion of essentially fake protesting only to return an hour later was of Manfred’s creation. It was revealed to be Mets lame duck owner Jeff Wilpon’s idea. After seeing Mets first baseman Dominic Smith openly weeping at a postgame press conference last night, this could not be a more tone-deaf and boneheaded move by Wilpon if indeed true.
