The versatility that Pro Football Hall of Famer Johnny Robinson displayed during his 12-year career with the Kansas City Chiefs makes some wonder why it took so long for him to earn a bust in Canton, Ohio. His final professional season came in 1971 but he didn’t get the call from the Hall until 2019.

The former LSU standout began his career in the backfield for head coach Hank Stram, who also has a bust in the Hall. In his first two pro seasons, he combined for 1,870 yards from scrimmage and 15 scores. That included 76 receptions for 1,212 yards and nine touchdowns. Robinson made the transition to the secondary and was nothing short of outstanding. He picked off 57 passes in his final 10 seasons and recovered six fumbles.

Robinson was part of a secondary that also included ball-hawking Pro Football Hall of Fame cornerback Emmitt Thomas. The latter ranks 12th in history with 58 interceptions and Robinson is tied for 13th in league annals with the aforementioned 57 picks. He was named to seven Pro Bowls and earned All-Pro honors six consecutive years from 1965-70.

The 12-year pro was also part of three AFL championship teams, including the Chiefs’ Super Bowl IV title campaign.
