The St. Louis Cardinals lost in the most painful way possible

There are losses that are simply tough to watch, and then there’s the way the St. Louis Cardinals managed to take an “L” on Saturday afternoon. The Cardinals and the Cleveland Indians had to go to extra innings due to both teams being unable to break a 1-1 tie. In the top of the 12th inning, Cleveland broke the tie following an RBI double from outfielder Tyler Naquin.

At the bottom of the frame, the Cardinals sent catcher Yadier Molina to second base. St. Louis outfielder Dexter Fowler grounded out and third baseman Matt Carpenter stepped up to the plate. Carpenter hit a ground-out to Cleveland first baseman Jose Ramirez, who then threw out Molina… who stood like a statue between third and home? Yup, that’s how the game ended for the Cardinals. Take a look at the dysfunction for yourselves.

The Cardinals found a new way to lose

Many baseball fans are wondering why Molina would stand well off third base instead of clinging to the bag. According to the FOX  broadcast, Molina appeared to be arguing that Carpenter’s grounder went foul, but replay shows that wasn’t the case. So, the veteran catcher will end up on this week’s MLB blooper reel.

This play summed up a horrific day of base-running for the Cardinals, who were looking to gain ground on the Chicago Cubs in the NL Central standings. St. Louis already had to deal with the aftermath of a 14-2 blowout loss to Cleveland on Friday, and now they have to grapple with this defeat.
