He would go on to play a pivotal role on both sides of the football for a franchise that would win back-to-back NFL championships in his second and third seasons, respectively, in the National Football League. While Pete Pihos was primarily a pass-catcher during his nine-year career with the Philadelphia Eagles, he also made his presence felt on defense when called upon.

In terms of offense, he led the NFL in receptions in both 1953 and ’55 and would tie for the league-high total in 1954. The passing game was not what it was in today’s game of football but during his years with the Eagles, he totaled 373 catches for 5619 yards and an impressive 61 scores. Three times in nine years, the Pro Football Hall of Fame totaled at least 10 touchdown receptions.

Pihos was actually drafted in 1945 but didn’t begin his playing career until 1947 due to military obligations. He was part of three straight postseason teams for Philadelphia during his first three years in the league. The club won consecutive NFL titles in 1948 and ’49 and in the latter, a 14-0 victory over the Los Angeles Rams, the six-time Pro Bowler and five-time All-Pro caught a 31-yard touchdown pass.
