One of the reasons we make mistakes is to learn from them. Experience is truly a great teacher. Few head coaches know this better than LSU head coach Ed Orgeron.
Orgeron’s first head coaching opportunity was at Ole Miss. That did not go so well; he was 10-25 in three seasons, including 3-21 in SEC play. He admits to many mistakes at Ole Miss. He even recorded those mistakes and observed the head coaches he’d work for before he got his dream job at LSU.
If there’s anything Orgeron has always been able to do, it’s recruit. The Larose, Louisiana native, has been able to win over a livingroom. The fact that he was able to win over Burrow is a testament to the type of recruiter he’s always been.
Though he did not have much success on the field at Ole Miss, two coaches from that staff, Matt Luke and Kevin Wilson, both went on to become head coaches.
From his staff at LSU, Dave Arranda accepted the head coaching job at Baylor and pass game coordinator Joe Brady is now the offensive coordinator for the Carolina Panthers.
In addition to learning from and admitting mistakes, Orgeron’s best asset is his flexibility. He has no issue in a change of philosophy if he thinks that will help his team win.
He admitted hiring Matt Canada was a mistake. He then hired Steve Ensminger as the offensive coordinator. Needing more firepower to accompany his defense, he hired Joe Brady away from the New Orleans Saints.
We know what that offense did last season. Can the Tigers do it again?
