Heisman Trophy rankings 2020: Top 5 candidates and 5 darkhorse picks

4. Najee Harris – Alabama running back
Najee Harris has been flying up Heisman Trophy boards for the past month. He’s still a heavy longshot, but people are starting to get on the bandwagon. The Alabama running back is poised to take an even bigger role in the offense now that the Crimson Tide weren’t able to practice as much as they’re used to with a brand new quarterback under center. Sure, Mac Jones got a couple starts last season after Tua Tagovailoa got hurt, but he shouldn’t be called a returning starter just yet.
This is where Harris comes in. The analysis of his expected season continues to fluctuate, which might have something to do with the SEC going to a conference-only schedule. Either way, Harris is going to dominate this season.
Harris is going into his senior year coming off a huge jump in production. Last season, he had more than 1,200 yards rushing, 300 yards receiving, and 20 total touchdowns. His touchdown production is where he especially took a step forward. Head coach Nick Saban and offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian are happy with his progression, so when the Crimson Tide are in a position to score, they will turn to Harris.
For running backs, the matchups don’t always matter as much. The stats matter a lot more. Harris is going to put up some major numbers, and he’s going to go past his numbers last season, even with a 10-game season. Chubba Hubbard might have to watch out for who’s coming for the crown now that Jonathan Taylor is in the NFL.
