The entire basketball world is grieving on Monday, as news broke that legendary Georgetown basketball coach John Thompson passed away. Stars across the country were heartbroken when they found out, with a long list of people taking to social media to share their thoughts.

For Hall of Famer, and arguably the best basketball player of all time, Michael Jordan, he was distraught to hear Thompson had died. While Jordan doesn’t have Twitter, he released a statement of his own to send well wishes to Thompson’s family and loved ones.

John Thompson will go down as one of the greatest college basketball coaches of all time

“Coach Thompson was truly a great man and a legend in college basketball,” Jordan said. “He had such a profound impact on his players and was a father figure to so many of them. I admired him and loved him dearly. My deepest condolences to his family and the Georgetown community.”

Thompson spent 27 seasons as the Georgetown head coach, winning 596 games. While leading the program, Thompson helped Georgetown win 13 Big East titles and make three Final Four appearances.

Thompson of course made history, becoming the first African American head coach to win a national championship after the Hoyas took down Houston in the 1984 final.

Thompson touched the lives of so many of his players, of course including fellow Georgetown legend Allen Iverson. As you can see in his Hall of Fame speech above, Thompson made quite the impact on his former point guard and changed his life forever.

The same can be said for countless other players out there who were fortunate enough to play under Thompson.
