After the death of the greatest Met of all-time, the team honored him in the dugout on Thursday

Tom Seaver passed away at 75 this week, and his death is tragic not just to the New York Mets organization, but MLB as a whole. The Mets are expected to unveil their previously-scheduled statue of Seaver in 2021, but

until then will have to honor him in whatever way they see fit. Seaver’s impact on the game isn’t lost on the current crop of Mets players, as they’ve found their own way to pay homage to one of the greatest pitchers who ever lived.

Seaver passed away on Monday from complications of Lewy body dementia and COVID-19, per the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown. He was diagnosed with dementia in 2019.

Seaver’s baseball life will not soon be forgotten

“Tom Terrific” was the Mets franchise. Every kid in New York who grew up during his era wanted to be Seaver, a three-time Cy Young award winner who pitched his way to 311 wins and an absurd career 2.86 ERA. Those numbers are rarely matched, let alone with the impact Seaver had on the community. Even long after he retired from baseball, Seaver was a regular at Mets games.

“He will always be the heart and soul of the Mets, the standard which all Mets aspire to,” Mike Piazza said.

Seaver was the best player on the Mets unforgettable 1969 World Series-winning team. Those Miracle Mets were thrilled to even reach the .500 mark, but Seaver knew they had far greater aspirations, declaring in the clubhouse this group was championship-worthy. Little did they know he was absolutely right, and borderline prophetic.

But even one season doesn’t sum up Seaver’s impact on baseball. It couldn’t possibly even begin to tell his story. Frankly, neither can we.

Our thoughts go out to the Seaver family during this difficult time.
