Texans eying Deshaun Watson extension that’ll pay him Russell Wilson money
Deshaun Watson may be getting a nice new contract soon
Deshaun Watson has made it clear he is worthy of a new contract with the Houston Texans. The team committed to him by picking up his fifth-year option for 2021 and the next step is an extension.
Watson is entering his fourth NFL season in 2020 and has made two straight Pro Bowls. The former No. 12 overall pick has also thrown for 26 touchdowns in each of the past two seasons and has 12 combined rushing touchdowns in that span as well.
So what type of money will he get? Ian Rapoport has indicated a new deal will not reach the heights of Patrick Mahomes, but will still give Watson a large fortune.
Deshaun Watson set for a lucrative extension
The 10-year Mahomes deal was too rich to reset the quarterback market. Fans should also note the Kansas City Chiefs can get out of the deal in 2025 with no penalty, so it is likely he never gets the full value of his mega-deal.
Watson is looking at something more in the range of Russell Wilson or Aaron Rodgers. Wilson got four years and $140 million with a $65 million signing bonus. Rodgers signed for four years and $134 million with a $57.5 million signing bonus. The key figure for Watson will be getting around Wilson’s figure of $107 million in guarantees. Aside from Mahomes, only Jared Goff and Carson Wentz have received more.
A new deal for Watson would cement him as the franchise guy in Houston and should help bring stability to the organization regardless of how long Bill O’Brien stays on as head coach. Locking Watson in could also allow ownership to move on from O’Brien and lure in top candidates who want to work with the quarterback.
Getting a deal done before the season isn’t necessary, but it does help clear up any unnecessary distractions. Watson wouldn’t have to enter the offseason worrying about his future and the Texans could have his contract on the books and plan the rest of the roster moving forward.
