Six players from Paris-Saint Germain’s first team have tested positive for the virus.

Ligue 1 soccer is already underway in France, but the league’s superstar side is facing a coronavirus outbreak.

Paris Saint-Germain, who played in the UEFA Champions League Final in Lisbon, Portugal a few weeks ago, confirmed today that Brazilian defender Marquinhos, Argentine striker Mauro Icardi, and Costa Rican goalkeeper Keylor Navas have all tested for COVID-19. Neymar, Angel di Maria, and Leandro Paredes have also tested positive, putting the total number of active cases on the first team at 6.

PSG said they suspected three other players might have the virus, although it’s not clear at the moment whether those suspected cases were included in today’s announcement.

The outbreak is thought to have stemmed from a trip to the Spanish island Ibiza following the French side’s Champions League defeat. Neymar, Paredes, di Maria, and Marquinhos were all on that trip. Marco Verratti was also on that trip, but has tested negative.

Players who have tested positive for the virus have been removed from training and placed under quarantine.

European soccer: have others tested positive for COVID-19?

For the most part, European soccer has managed to avoid major outbreaks of coronavirus since returning to play over the summer.

Atletico Madrid had two players test positive on their men’s team and five players test positive on their women’s team, but both groups were able to keep the spread under control once it came to their attention.

There have been a handful of other positive tests. Steve Mandana withdrew from the French national team roster for the UEFA Nations League after he tested positive for COVID-19. Mandana plays his club soccer at Marseilles. In line with current health protocols, Didier Deschamps will not be calling up a replacement goalkeeper.
